SEC Stock Split Verification Guide

Verify a stock split against the issuer’s original SEC filing by matching the filer, split ratio, relevant dates, and filing document. This guide includes a dated NVIDIA example and a browser-side link builder for EDGAR. It does not determine whether a corporate action applies to a particular brokerage account.

Find an issuer filing in EDGAR

The link searches SEC filing text for “stock split” and narrows to 8-K forms. Check the issuer and filing period on SEC.gov.

What should I verify in a stock split filing?

Start with the issuer name and CIK shown on the filing, then read the filing and any incorporated exhibit rather than relying on a search snippet. Record the split ratio exactly as stated, such as “ten-for-one.” Note each date separately: announcement, record date, distribution or effective date, and the date split-adjusted trading is expected to begin may differ. If the filing references an exhibit or charter amendment, open it and confirm the operative terms there.

EDGAR’s full-text search accepts company names, ticker symbols, CIKs, and filing text. The search link on this page adds the phrase “stock split” and an 8-K form filter as a starting point. A result is not proof by itself: confirm the filer, read the primary document, and search other filing periods or forms if the first results do not contain the relevant event.

Example: NVIDIA’s 2024 ten-for-one split

NVIDIA’s Form 8-K filed June 7, 2024 says the company filed an amendment to effect a ten-for-one forward split. The filing states that the amendment became effective at 4:01 p.m. Eastern Time on June 7, and that split-adjusted trading was expected to begin at market open on June 10, 2024. These are distinct dates and events; the example shows why a record should label the date field instead of storing one ambiguous “split date.”

Example record: issuer: NVIDIA Corporation (CIK 0001045810; ticker NVDA); ratio: 10-for-1 forward split; filing date: 2024-06-07; amendment effective: 2024-06-07 at 4:01 p.m. ET; split-adjusted trading expected: 2024-06-10; primary source: NVIDIA Form 8-K, accession 0001045810-24-000144.

Keep a source-linked verification record

For your own notes, capture the issuer and CIK, exact ratio, each relevant date with its label and time zone, filing form and filed date, accession number, and a direct SEC document URL. If the filing’s exhibit carries the operative terms, save that exhibit URL too. This record form is printable; entries stay in the current browser page and are not sent to MarketPlain.

Sources and date

Accessed 2026-11-03: SEC EDGAR Full Text Search describes search by ticker, company name, CIK, and filing text. The worked example uses the issuer’s June 7, 2024 Form 8-K. Filing contents and dates above are drawn from that primary document.

Frequently asked questions

Is every stock split documented in an 8-K?

This guide does not assume that every issuer or event uses the same filing or document. EDGAR’s 8-K search is a starting point; review the issuer’s filings and cited exhibits, and broaden your search when needed.

Which date is the stock split date?

A filing can describe multiple relevant dates. Preserve each with its label and time zone, such as an amendment effective date and the expected first split-adjusted trading date.

Does this verify my brokerage account’s share adjustment?

No. It helps locate and record an issuer filing. Contact the broker or transfer agent for account-specific processing questions.
