Crypto Tax Estimate Calculator

Estimate a simplified gain or loss from one crypto disposition using your proceeds, adjusted cost basis, transaction costs, and an optional tax rate you supply. This is an arithmetic aid, not a calculation of your US tax bill or filing advice.

Enter transaction amounts to see an estimate.

A user-selected rate is applied only to positive modeled gain. It is not your effective or statutory tax rate.

What does a crypto tax estimator calculate?

This crypto tax estimator calculates a simplified result for one disposition: sale proceeds minus adjusted cost basis and entered disposition costs. If that result is positive, it multiplies the gain by the tax rate you enter to show an illustrative amount. If the result is zero or negative, the displayed estimate is zero. Actual tax treatment depends on the transaction, your records, applicable rules, and your full tax situation.

The IRS treats digital assets as property for federal income tax purposes. Its guidance says a sale for US dollars can require recognition of capital gain or loss, subject to limitations on deducting capital losses. The IRS describes amount realized and transaction costs in its digital asset FAQs. Those rules require accurate records and allocation; this page does not determine either for you.

Use a basis that reflects the units disposed of and any applicable adjustments. A wallet transfer is not necessarily a sale, and a crypto-to-crypto exchange may have different reporting details from a cash sale. Rewards, mining, staking, gifts, payments, fees paid in tokens, and other transactions can need separate treatment. This calculator does not classify transactions, select lots, determine holding period, apply capital-loss limits, account for prior losses, or calculate state, local, foreign, net investment income, or ordinary income taxes.

The optional rate is only a scenario input. It is not selected from tax tables, and applying it to a positive gain does not reproduce a tax return computation. A real return may combine transactions, distinguish short-term and long-term items, apply losses and other adjustments, and use tax rules that change over time. Keep transaction and basis records and consult current IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional for a filing decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does every crypto sale create a tax?

A sale can result in a reportable gain or loss, but the tax consequences depend on the facts and applicable limitations. This tool does not decide whether a particular event is taxable.

Does this know my tax bracket?

No. Enter a rate only to explore a hypothetical calculation. The tool does not choose or validate a tax rate.

Can I use this for staking rewards?

Not to determine reward income or its basis. The calculator only compares entered proceeds, basis, costs, and a rate for a single disposition.

Where can I check current rules?

Review the IRS digital asset FAQs and the current instructions for the relevant forms. Guidance and reporting requirements can change.
