What does a bond yield to maturity calculator estimate?
Yield to maturity is the discount rate that equates the price paid for a bond with the present value of its remaining scheduled coupon payments and principal repayment, assuming the issuer makes those payments and the bond is held to maturity. This calculator estimates that rate for a plain fixed-coupon bond with equal coupon periods.
The calculation uses the price you enter as the amount paid, face value as the principal repaid at maturity, coupon rate to determine equal payments, years to maturity as a whole number of years, and a selected frequency of 1, 2, 4, or 12 periods per year. It numerically solves: price = Σ[coupon payment ÷ (1 + r)t] + face value ÷ (1 + r)N, where r is the yield per coupon period, t runs from 1 through N, and N is years × payments per year. The displayed nominal annual YTM is r multiplied by payment frequency. This convention quotes a periodic yield on an annualized basis; it does not convert to an effective annual yield.
For a hypothetical illustration, a bond priced below face value with positive coupons will generally need a yield above its coupon rate to reflect both coupon income and the modeled gain from repayment at face value. Actual yield depends on the bond's cash flows and market price; the calculator does not provide current bond information.

This simplified estimate assumes a noncallable bond with fixed, equal coupons and a whole number of years to maturity. It excludes accrued interest, settlement date, irregular first or final periods, calls, puts, sinking funds, floating or inflation-linked payments, default, taxes, fees, and coupon reinvestment differences. Market conventions may use a specific day-count basis and settlement price that this tool does not model. For an actual security, compare the bond documents and broker-provided yield calculations.
Frequently asked questions
Is yield to maturity the same as the coupon rate?
No. The coupon rate determines scheduled interest relative to face value. YTM also reflects the price paid, principal repayment, payment frequency, and time remaining.
What does the calculator solve?
It finds the periodic discount rate that makes the present value of the entered bond's modeled coupons and face value equal the entered price, then multiplies that rate by payments per year.
Does this include accrued interest or a call feature?
No. It treats the entered price as the purchase price and assumes the bond remains outstanding until maturity with the stated coupon schedule. It does not calculate yield to call or yield to worst.
Does YTM guarantee the return?
No. It is an estimate based on scheduled payments and assumptions. Issuer payments, holding period, reinvestment rates, taxes, costs, and market conventions can change realized results.
